Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is Legends of Tomorrow?
A prime-time spin-off television show based on CW’s Arrow and Flash, featuring a time travel twist on the usual continuity with an entourage of DC universe characters.
Do I need to know anything about it?
It wouldn’t hurt to have watched any of the shows but it’s really not required. A working knowledge of history is better, as is having a basic familiarity with DC comics but this is also not required. The DCU is generally regarded as a resource for story or easter eggs.
What’s the setting?
Los Angeles, or at least part of it. Just as much of it has been replaced by earlier versions of itself as it has had sections of it transformed into other times and places. A chunk of Future Coast City, The Flash Museum of the 31st century, a chunk of 1920s Chicago, and even the World's fair of 1905. Time and Space has collapsed into a singularity, which means that this may very well be a pocket dimension, and time is passing normally in the regular timeline.
Can my character leave the city?
No. As a time storm rages on outside, the characters who arrive are trapped in limits of downtown at game start, and the city limits thereafter should things be expanded by the mods.
The effect of trying to leave the restricted zones will be like boomeranging back to where they were. They simply cannot walk past a certain point. Chances are if they do manage to escape they’ll be thrust into the time stream and warped somehow. Possibly to reflect another version of themselves. Best bet is to find a quantum physicist and stick to them like glue.
Are other DC universe shows involved?
Flash, Arrow and by extent, Supergirl, are all part of the same continuity, but it focuses mainly on the core two which Legends is based on. This game will also utilize comic book lore in regards to places of interest and give characters a look into possible futures of that world.
If this is a jamjar, are we going to see sections of my character’s universe?
There’s a possibility that it will happen as the game progresses. Just as the time storm is folding in different places from different times, it can also do the same for realities it has snatched people from. However, we’re likely to play this as an event rather than an everyday thing.
How much freedom do players have in adding locations/times to the map?
There is an emphasis on world building in this game, and we want the players to have the freedom to play in different time periods and settings. There will be events which will enable them to bring in places and times from their own worlds so they can host their own events or just add a little of their own canon to the world. However, if you're adding a location then please run it by the mods before you do so.
Historical places can be added at any time.
What is the real world to game day ratio?
For every three days in OOC, a day passes in the game, so 3:1.
How often will game events occur?
Events will not be monthly, but more on a set schedule based on mod announcements. We'll be giving you advanced notice.
Events will be random in regards to what they are.
Can players create events?
Player run events are fine for whenever you want to do them. We suggest not to try and do them when there's an event up though because it would be too confusing and probably too much in general.
If they're super involved or worldbuild related then pass them by us first so we can give the green or red light.
Applications
What kind of Characters can I play?
Canon Character: Any character from any published media from comics, movies, cartoons or books, etc.
Standard OC: From an original universe created by the player. These apps will require strict scrutiny in processing.
Player Character OC: World of Warcraft, Star Trek online, Pathfinder, basically any game where you’re allowed to create a character for play through the game. Equal to standard OC as far as app scrutiny.
Do you allow doubles?
Currently, we do not allow two versions of the exact same character from the same canon, but we would allow duplicate characters from different versions of a canon, canon AUs and different iterations of a character. Therefore there can only be one Rose Tyler, but we would allow the eleventh doctor and the tenth doctor. We would also allow Christopher Reeves Superman and a DCAU Superman, or DC TV superman at the same time.
What do I do for canon updates?
Your character gets carried off by the time storm and gets dumped back in at your choosing. However, they might have unexpected side effects. Perhaps they end up intercepting a time wave that screws with their personal reality somewhat? Temporary AU? Temporary crossover into an enemy soldier? Up to you. Please remember that these aren’t permanent changes.
They will not remember their experiences outside the singularity but they will recall the sensation of missing memories.
Another option is to have your character have flashes of memory as events in their time line are added to their memory. These flashes are disorientating and may be as uncomfortable as a headache. They can also cause emotional distress or confusion.
Wedding rings can disappear, scars appear without immediate understanding as to why as time catches up with your character.
When I update my character will they remember the game while at home?
When characters return home they won't remember being within the bubble. Logically they can't since it would affect the actual canon, so no remembering.
My character is dead in canon, can I still app?
Yep. Time does funny things. They can experience the same conditions of death as if you die in the game or just arrive in total shock of suddenly being alive again.
How many characters am I allowed to have?
You may have a total of six with two characters of the same canon. We ask that if you do play two characters from the same canon that they are not characters who interact frequently to avoid conflict of interest.
When are apps processed?
The first week of every month as long as apps are open.
How many characters can I app per app cycle?
Two.
Do I need a reserve to app?
No. Reserves only protect that character from being apped by a non-reserve app.
Do you accept app challenges?
At this time, no.
What is required for activity check?
One thread with five comments from your character, per character, per month.
Game Mechanics
How does my character arrive?
Your character is caught up in the time storm and is dropped off at a random location within the borders of the downtown LA area. It’s a fairly large area, nearly five square miles. It shouldn’t be very difficult for characters to find their way around, especially since they can get around just like in a normal city. It’s just a matter of finding your way to the people who know what’s going on. Thankfully Gideon can locate all of the time refugees given their unique dimensional vibration.
Who is Gideon?
Gideon is the onboard interactive artificial consciousness designed to operate the Waverider and its critical system. She doesn’t seem to be cooperative and appears to be operating on an unnamed protocol right now. She won’t even respond to her captain! She will help the refugees and often in the most minimalist way possible. She also seems to be a bit sassier than usual, especially towards the Legends.
How does time work within the time storm?
Mostly, it just doesn't. Watches stop ticking and the day and night cycle seems to be on the whim of the tide of the storm as do the seasons. Climate basically means nothing within the city limits, and it has more to do with the time and place that you're currently in than it does with Los Angeles specifically.
This basically means that the timelines of every individual thing in the time storm can be effected independently of other things. Eiffel Tower may be half built tomorrow, and your character might be aged to their twilight years.
Still, what if my character finds themselves in a difficult situation, like dinosaurs or Roman centurions?
There will be a monthly log sending characters out on patrol to track down the new aberrant time refugees. Characters are not required to participate if they don't want to, nor are the players. Players can run mini-events alongside this log such as welcoming parties or a medical tent, for example, depending on the needs and wants of the player base.
Is there a network? How do I access it?
There is a network that Gideon has set up. It can be accessed via any device which uses a simcard as she has developed a simcard to be compatible with the signals that are broadcasted by the Waverider. It is separate from the normal comm system and can piggyback on normal cellphone networks so if a character makes friends with a local, they can freely communicate.
The network is capable of hosting streaming video conversations and video voice mail. It also has a generous 4G data plan. Sim card chips and phones as necessary [standard iPhone/android variety] are distributed as soon as they make it close to the Waverider.
If a character has their own phone they just slide the simcard in and have access to their own server for anything from video chat to blogging and texting.
That means my character won’t get their comm device when they arrive. How will they find their way?
Gideon will reach out to them directly hacking through any media device she can find nearby and instruct them on what to do. She will also send someone out to find them if they appear to be lost, so some way, somehow, they will get their sim card. You are free to handwave an initial meeting with someone giving your character a simcard/phone as well. It is up to the player to decide how long it takes for the character to figure things out. Gideon will issue the simcards or devices when the characters are contacted as well as housing assignments. Until they get a Waverider simcard they can’t use the network.
Out of character, you can post a network post as soon as you’d like. Just be mindful of how long it takes for your character to find their way to the Waverider.
What if my character doesn’t want to cooperate?
That is their prerogative. They don’t have to accept the help of Gideon or the Legends but they’re certainly encouraged to. The network can also be hacked into by especially talented computer users. Hackers will not be able to violate the Waverider’s security but they can certainly piggyback on the network to send messages off the grid. It is much easier just to get a simcard or phone to have a means of communication in this strange new world, however. Just don’t expect to be easily able to post to the network without one Besides, you can use your own device so that is a perk.
This takes place in a superhero universe. Can my powerless character get powers?
In-universe, metahumans (humans with powers) were created when the Star Labs particle accelerator exploded causing a wave of dark matter energy. Since people from other worlds are traveling through dark matter energy there is a chance that they may also receive superpowers of their own. At entry, normally non-powered characters are allowed to have only one power of their choice, with possibilities of gaining powers as time goes on. Powers are not required to play. Getting a meta-power can also be part of a plot.
Where does my Character stay?
There will be places around where the Waverider is hidden, including apartment buildings which were purchased by Gideon using funds from Palmer Tech. The apartment complexes have plenty of space. Many, two to three bedroom and studio apartments with a bohemian atmosphere.
Otherwise, they can find their own places to stay around town. Be careful, cost of living is quite expensive in LA.
Can my character Own a business? Get a job?
Yes. Even with places from all time periods being forced together in one city, there doesn’t seem to be as many disputes between different time periods as you would think. The people of the 31st century get along fine with the cave people down the street, and the taxi system is 30% horse and carriage.
Currency is freely traded between time zones and seem to have the same value. You can use a silver piece from first century Israel in a Starbucks and get American dollars back in change. Aberrations may be called upon to do favors or jobs for people in different time zones at the request of Gideon, from dino wrangling to keep the Nazis in line.
Can my character board the Waverider?
Under certain circumstances, yes. But Gideon has it on lockdown due to the protocol which prevents boarding except under certain circumstances. She will allow boarding as repairs are needed and for taking resources off the ship to be used elsewhere such as building a base. Further, she may only allow a few select people that she trusts on board at any time so it may be prudent to make nice with the AI.
If Gideon has the ship on lockdown, characters who try to force their way into the ship will face defensive measures or a power inhibitor pulse which will lock and/or disable their powers for 24 hours.
What happens if my character dies?
Up to you. A time anomaly can bring them back with any manner of negative side effects, and let’s be fair there should absolutely be side effects, or they can be removed from the game. After all, there is no greater drama than a good death.
There will be a one week OOC Penalty before the character can be brought back, and more than likely they will suffer from a temporary rewrite of their history to turn them into a temporary AU. This condition is completely opt-in/voluntary and has the character forced into a bad ending version of their world, where circumstances have made them more antagonistic, and oddly fixated on making life miserable for others.
My character has a giant robot. Can they keep it?
Yes and no. Not in its current state. If you choose to keep your mobile suit, Jaeger, Zoid or left arm of Voltron, you’re going to need to accept it as your power. Further, the robot will shrink to become more manageable. Gundams can become exosuits or robots up to eight feet tall that are psionically linked/controlled by the pilot. Semi-sentient robots like Voltron or Zoids become the relative size of the animal they represent [Unless they're dinosaurs in which case no larger than a car] and are either psionically linked or have a mind of their own. Other alternatives can be asked below. Generally, the idea is to keep the size down and maintain power balance. There can easily be events where they are returned to their original size.
How are large characters such as Kaiju or Transformers handled?
You have options. You can humanize them, which means they have the option of getting a meta-power to make up for their loss in size and strength. They can be shrunk to any size eight feet or smaller, or a situation similar to the options for mecha in the question above. IE: Humanized, but transformer like exosuit.
And Animal Characters?
Humanized or given human speech. You could also anthropomorphize them but generally, the only caveat is whether or not they can communicate. This applies to characters such as Toothless or Pikachu. For characters like them, their meta power slot would be taken up by human level intelligence and telepathy/human speech.
What if my character is a child?
There are options. If they are a meta human they can live at the Titans Tower if they prefer minimal supervision. However, Gideon will more than likely assign a guardian/mentor to them to keep an eye on them at bare minimum.
How does my character become a mentor?
All out of character aspects of being a guardian/mentor is handled voluntarily by those who wish their characters to be chosen. In character, they can be assigned to a youth voluntarily or in voluntarily based on the wishes of the player.

Question about a very hard to home character....
But... can I app a sentient PLACE? In canon the Castle can manipulate itself and the small township attached to it, so ideally it would be an additional part of the setting, the castle and town, but one that is alive. The Castle communicates as a disembodied voice that can be heard anywhere it wishes in the castle or town... and when I say it controls the town.... It one time moved two buildings together to smash a group of invaders. The lamp posts are all made to look like odd robot people, they are called the Torchmen and when the town is under attack from above, they fly up and set fire to the attackers.
In the castle itself, control is, of course, stronger. The castle has a long history of taking amusement form quietly moving the rooms guests are staying in, dropping the floor, creating random death traps.... But it is filled with labs full of interesting tech, and dead bodies here and there, interesting experiments, small sized fun death robots. And... um.... it's a little insane. Agatha fixed MOST of the broken linkages, so it's no longer as schizophrenic as it used to be... but it is still insane. And gleefully so.
So... Can I app a sentient setting that has some experience with time issues?

Unfortunately, we can't allow an entire section of the setting to be a character, but, if apped, the castle would be changed into a humanoid type thing.

Though Bang becomes tempting if I did want to go full on homicidal crazy in a person.

You have options. You can have the zord be downsized into a wearable power armor, or be downsized as a smaller version of itself which would be controlled by the Ranger it corresponds with. Basically like having your own personal Baymax.

1a. How are kid-characters assigned to people (especially as per this possible random room scenario) in housing? As the FAQ & Housing page lists the apartments being studios, two bedrooms, and three bedrooms, how do we apply for which of those options we'd like? Or is it a later upgradeable thing, to move into different ones? It says we can move out of the apartments, but to beware that LA is expensive: how does the move out process work in brass tactic rules? Is it into other apartments and houses?
2. What is the official standing on how application revisions are made?
2b. I’ve never seen what happened with the applications this time ever before in two decades of rp games. Can you explain the justification/reasoning for allowing a second person to app a rejected character in the same month, without allowing revisions to even be attempted by the first person once?
3. Is there a plot breakdown for the future month (and/or months coming) so that people can pencil things into their real-life calendars to prepare both game life and real life for taking part in this game? This is incredibly important to me given how intense my job is and then the fact I run almost a dozen extracurricular groups between my school and my personal life.
4. How often can we expect OOC updates on what is happening in the game: per month? Biweekly? Weekly?
5. Should there be introduction posts for new characters tacked up on the OOC journal, or will there be monthly posts like the one we had earlier this week?
6. How will disputes be handled?
7. What are the boss levels of opponents/antagonists that are roaming in the game (such as gangsters, dinosaurs, cavemen, on and on and one) that are not the big bads we'll have to deal with in plots? Like how powerful or not powerful should any of the deterrents currently on be considered at their worst?
8. How are character permissions enforced? Is it just between the players, and what happens if one of the players refuses to adhere to something the other player is requesting/needing for their own ability to comfortably play here?
9. Will there be a place where all powers currently taken are listed? Can powers be doubled? Are there powers that are off limits to our characters or characters that are considered too powerful to be allowed into the game (such as do very much exist in Marvel)?
10. In the FAQ it says players are encouraged to create places/people who have been dragged into the game setting. I know there is currently a comprehensive list of locations on the map, but will there also be a comprehensive list in plain writing, too. Also, ones of the current time periods/types of the creatures and baddies brought in/present/being newly added, too?
10a. Also, it says run above by the mod, but we've been asked to keep questions to the FAQ: do we get those places/bad guys okayed here, or will there be another page for it?
11. Will there be a calendar mocked up for the 3:1 day ratio so we can see at a glance what days we are on when? It's definitely an easy thing to do in the first few weeks, but I know I'm going to get super confused about it by next month.
11b. Will there be a google calendar, or even some kind of listed calendar somewhere, for it like a few other games run (for both their days and being able to see when important plot days will be)?
12. Apps are the first week of every month. How soon do reserves open before that, and how soon do they close during the week of the app period?
13. Will there be an over-arching game plot to figure out a) why our characters magically have powers and b) why our characters have been pulled seemingly-randomly from time and space everywhere? Is there any way for any other characters (or, even, Gideon) to tell you have powers before they are triggered into existence by something in game?
14. What jobs are available? Do we make these up, ask questions about them here, or will there be a post made for that later? What are the different steps for going about owning a business vs. getting a job?
15. Does anyone currently have money, or a bank account, or anything like this at all? I.e. , how are we feeding ourselves etc. on day/week one? Or is room and board all-inclusive in theses Gideon apartments?
16. Did our characters bring anything with them? I’m asking this one super broadly, like superheroes who did or did not have their costumes on at the time of being stolen, down to like smaller personal mementos or things the player could have chosen that they'd have like touchstones in the sudden maelstrom of this game?
17. Is there an in-game calendar/time-passing-notion existence of any kind? Like will people know when holidays, months, week, seasons are (especially curious for any plots as related to our own holidays and seasons)? Or is it like being on the Waverider itself where all of these things are disorienting non-existent because you are already outside of time, and the setting will be bringing in time periods from all over the year/forever all the time?
18. Will there be a schedule for when we get an aberrant time refugees report for each month (especially this month), so we know who all we can be up against?
19. What all can the OOC comm be used for? Like Introductions as listed higher, but, also, could there be occasional memes or anything else on it, to continue to build community comradery to build up all our fun and ties and plans together?
20. How should we handle meta-gaming if/when it happens?
21. For this game, how many days away necessitates us needing to put in for an official hiatus vs. the need for showing activity in a given week/month?
More later as I remember all the questions that have been cropping up for me during the recent like week of countdown to open. Thank you so much for all that you do! <3

22b. Also, What are the rules for those? Do they have to be open everyone? Can we suggest full level game plots and events? How does plotting work, both as players playing the mod plots, or players trying to run plots for small groups, for 1-2 characters, for everyone else? What are the hard-fast rules for this, too?
PLEASE ANSWER ASAP
for how long, and can they come back different if I app it to the powers app?
no subject
Apped powers on the power app are separate to those the character would already have, so they would be added on.
